Finding Your People at the Platform
I’m standing there listening to the rules for yesterday’s powerlifting meet when I look up and notice something that makes me smile.
The two lifters standing in front of me are wearing Sthira joggers.
Honestly, it set the tone for the rest of the day.
Lifters from all over the Midwest came together yesterday and proceeded to spend the entire day setting state records. I eventually lost count of how many records fell. It was one of those meets where you could feel the energy in the room building lift after lift.
For those who don’t know, Sthira is a Sanskrit word meaning steadiness, strength, stability, and firmness.
And really, what better place to test those things in yourself than under a barbell during squats, bench presses, and deadlifts?
Last year I read an article that made an interesting claim. It suggested that if someone feels lonely or disconnected, they should consider joining a private, premium gym. The reasoning was simple: people who consistently show up in spaces dedicated to improving themselves tend to build stronger communities.
I decided to test that theory at Freedom Strength & Fitness.
It worked.
Last summer was one of the best seasons of my life. I made friends I genuinely hope to keep for a very long time. The kind of friendships built through early mornings, missed lifts, new PRs, and long conversations between sets.
Spending the entire day with those same people yesterday felt like a reminder of why those spaces matter.
After 35 years of hearing the phrase “find your people,” I finally understand what it means.
The FSF powerlifting team gave me my answer.
Congratulations to all the new state record holders, the lifters who set PRs, and the first-place finishers.
More than anything, thank you for being the kind of community people hope to find.
As always, I love spending time with you.
